In January of this year (2022), the European Union (EU) began to implement new legislation geared towards improving animal health and combating microbial resistance by limiting the use of antibiotics in animals.
The legislation, introduced 3 years ago, envisions measures to promote the responsible and wise use of antimicrobials in animals.
According to the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety (Stella Kyriakides), by the year 2030 the target is to have reduced the use of antibiotics in EU farm animals and aquaculture by 50%.
The measures envisioned by the regulations include the wise and responsible use of antimicrobials in animals, prohibiting the preventative use of antibiotics and their use as a means of boosting growth and production.
In addition, the new regulations provide a new framework, which is, “innovative and suitable for animal medication and will provide incentives aimed at stimulating innovation and increasing their availability.”
According to a study published in The Lancet, around 1.27 million people died in 2019 due to antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a higher number of deaths than those caused by malaria or AIDS.
